The Old Book of Tang, Annals of Gaozu, records that Qutu Tong was originally a defender of the Sui dynasty, guarding Hedong and Tongguan: 'On the day of Wuwu, Gaozu personally led the troops to besiege Hedong, and Qutu Tong defended and did not come out.' Only after defeat did he surrender. However, in the Romance of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, chapter 050, he participated as a Tang general in the battle of Liaocheng against Yuwen Huaji, and was even sent by Li Jing to catch birds: 'Secretly dispatched a general, Qutu Tong, leading five hundred skilled hunters, each carrying weapons and nets, roaming the outskirts, watching for birds flying out of Liaocheng, and then catching them.' In official history, it was Dou Jiande who captured Liaocheng and killed Yuwen Huaji, not the Tang army, and Qutu Tong certainly had no such bird-catching plot.
