Is “The final outcome of Ji Ling.” true?

The novel describes that when Ji Ling retreated with Yuan Shu's defeat, he encountered Zhang Fei, and after less than ten exchanges, Zhang Fei thrust his spear and killed Ji Ling (Chapter 21 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms: "Zhang Fei, without further ado, went straight for Ji Ling. They fought for less than ten exchanges, and Zhang Fei gave a great shout and thrust Ji Ling off his horse"). In the official history, Ji Ling once led 30,000 infantry and cavalry as the main general to attack Lü Bu during the conflict between Yuan Shu and Lü Bu, but it is not recorded that he died at Zhang Fei's hands or participated in this battle (Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Biographies of Lü Bu, Zhang Miao, and Zang Hong: "Yuan Shu sent his general Ji Ling with 30,000 infantry and cavalry to attack Lü Bu... When Ji Ling and the others heard that Lü Bu had arrived, they all withdrew their troops and dared not attack again").
