In official historical records such as the 《宋史》, there is no trace of Hu Yanzhuo's activities at all. The novel 《水浒传》, in order to enhance the military credibility of Liangshanpo in resisting the imperial court, deliberately portrayed him as a direct descendant of the famous historical general Hu Yanzan. The plots of his linked cavalry attacking Liangshan and dying in battle against the Jin are entirely fabricated by the novel to cater to readers' loyalty complex, with no historical basis whatsoever. The original text states: "我闻此人，祖乃开国功臣河东名将呼延赞之后，嫡派子孙。" It also refers to his troops as "连环马官军". (《水浒传·第055回》)
