History vs. fiction
The novel rewrites the way Zisi killed Duke Li of Zheng from poisoning to assassination.
The official histories record that Zisi, angered by not being treated with courtesy during an audience, ordered a cook to poison Duke Li (Xi Gong). See Records of the Grand Historian, 'Hereditary House of Zheng': 'Zisi, enraged, had the cook poison Duke Li, and announced to the feudal lords that Duke Li had died of a sudden illness.' The novel rewrites this as: due to political disagreement, Duke Xi, in a fit of determination, personally went on a mission and stayed overnight at a post station, where Zisi sent retainers to ambush and assassinate him. See Chronicles of the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms, Chapter 60: 'Duke Xi, in a fit of determination, went personally, and that night stayed at a post station. Prince Fei sent retainers to ambush and kill him, claiming he died of a sudden illness.'
