History vs. fiction
Yue Lin. Third son of Yue Fei, Court Gentleman for Dispensations. Fourth son of Yue Fei, captured by the Miao King and made his son-in-law. Younger brother of Yue Lei, rescued by Shi Cen. Son of Yue Fei, son-in-law of Li Shufu.
Historically, Yue Lin indeed existed. His deeds are recorded in sources such as the History of Song. For example, the biography of Yue Fei records: 'Lei, Loyal Instructor, Gentleman of the Imperial Gate, posthumously awarded Martial Strategy Gentleman. Lin, Court Gentleman for Dispensations, Drafter of the Hall of Enduring Glory, posthumously awarded Grand Master of the Palace. Initially, when Yue Fei was imprisoned, Qin Hui ordered his relative Wang Hui to search his house, obtaining several boxes of imperial edicts, which were stored in the Left Treasury of the Southern Storehouse. Lin requested from Emperor Xiaozong to return them. Lin's son Ke, after verifying and compiling the fifteen imperial edicts from the Huaixi campaign, arranged them in order, all verifiable in terms of the sequence of troop dispatches and reinforcements. During the Jiading period, he submitted the five-volume 'Collection to Appeal to Heaven for Injustice' and the two-volume 'Record of Heaven's Decree'. Zhen, Court Gentleman for Dispensations, Supervisor of Tea and Salt Affairs for the Jiangnan East Circuit. Ting, Military Gentleman, Gentleman of the Imperial Gate.' In the novel 'The Complete Story of Yue Fei', Chapter 71 describes: 'It is said that the Miao King captured Yue Lin and brought him into the Miao cave, shouting to the Miao soldiers: "Bind this little worm!" The Miao soldiers immediately bound Yue Lin and pushed him up to the Silver Throne Hall. The Miao King shouted: "Where are you from, you worm, that you dare to kill my vanguard? Now that I have captured you, do you still refuse to kneel?" Yue Lin said: "I am the son of a great marshal; how could I kneel to you, a barbarian? If you want to kill me, kill me; no need for more words." The Miao King said: "What marshal is your father, that he is so arrogant, and you do not kneel to my royal person?" Yue Lin said: "My father is the Junior Guardian of the Crown Prince, Duke of the Founding of the State of Wuchang, Marshal Yue. Who does not know him?" The Miao King said: "Is he not the Yue Fei who swept away the Jin troops at Zhuxian Town?" Yue Lin said: "Indeed." The Miao King said: "Which son of Marshal Yue are you, and why have you come here?" The young master said: "I am the fourth, named Yue Lin. My father and brothers were all framed by the treacherous minister Qin Hui; I fled here with my mother." Hearing this, the Miao King said: "So you are the son of Marshal Yue! I have been rude!" He then descended from his seat, released the bonds, and greeted the young master with a bow, seating him.'
