History vs. fiction
Fictional cause of death
In official history, Lü Kuang was originally a subordinate of Yuan Shang, but later betrayed Yuan Shang and surrendered to Cao Cao. It is recorded: 'Lü Kuang and Lü Xiang of Dongping rebelled against Shang, stationed at Yangping, led their troops to surrender, and were enfeoffed as marquises' (Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Annals of Emperor Wu). There is no subsequent record of his death in battle. However, in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 35, to highlight the bravery of Liu Bei's generals, the plot of Lü Kuang and Lü Xiang attacking Xinye is fictionalized. When Lü Kuang clashed with Zhao Yun, 'in less than a few rounds, Zhao Yun pierced Lü Kuang with his spear and knocked him off his horse.'
