History vs. fiction
Fictional cause of death
In official history, Liu Pi was originally a leader of the Yellow Turbans, later surrendered to Cao Cao, then rebelled and responded to Yuan Shao, joining forces with Liu Bei. Cao Cao sent troops to defeat him, and it is recorded: "Bei fled, and Pi's camp was broken" (Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Annals of Emperor Wu). After that, there is no clear record of Liu Pi's whereabouts in official history. However, in Chapter 31 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it is fictionalized that when Liu Bei retreated and encountered Gao Lan's pursuit, Liu Pi stepped forward to save him, "came to fight with Gao Lan. In less than three rounds, he was cut down from his horse by Gao Lan's blade."
