  Historically, Liu Ni indeed existed. His deeds are recorded in sources such as the History of Song. For example, in the Biography of Yue Fei, it is recorded: "Liu Yu sent his son Lin and nephew Ni to invade Huaixi by separate routes. The character 'nephew' was originally missing. According to Liu Ni being Liu Yu's nephew, in the Jin Tuo Cui Bian, volume 7, Xing Shi Bian Nian, and in the Song Nan Du Shi Jiang Zhuan, volume 2, Biography of Yue Fei, the character 'nephew' appears before 'Ni', so it was added." In the novel Shuo Yue Quan Zhuan, chapter 33 describes: "It is said that Liu Ni urged his horse forward to capture the Elder, who stepped back, lost his footing, and fell, hitting the back of his head, creating a large hole. The Elder, being old, fainted and bled profusely. The servants quickly helped him up and carried him to the study to lie down. When he regained consciousness, he said to the servants, 'Quickly call my son!'"
