In fiction · Journey to the West
The old turtle was the original owner of the water mansion in the Tongtian River. After the Spirit King (Linggan Dawang) seized his home, he later carried Tang Sanzang and his disciples across the river. When they returned from obtaining the scriptures, the old turtle carried them across again, but because Tang Sanzang had not asked the Buddha about his lifespan on his behalf, the old turtle sank, causing the group to fall into the water.
