History vs. fiction
Death cause and participation in battle are fictional
In official history, it is recorded that Jiao Chu was originally a general under the Yuan family, but later betrayed Yuan Xi and Yuan Shang. 'Xi and Shang were attacked by their generals Jiao Chu and Zhang Nan, and fled to Liaoxi Wuhuan. Chu proclaimed himself Inspector of Youzhou... turning against Yuan and submitting to Cao' (Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Biographies of Dong, Er, Yuan, and Liu). After surrendering to Cao, he was enfeoffed as a marquis, and there is no record of his participation in the Battle of Red Cliffs. However, in Chapter 48 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, to showcase the naval strength of Eastern Wu, it is fictionalized that Jiao Chu volunteered to lead a small boat to challenge Eastern Wu, and as a result, 'Han Dang raised his spear and stabbed Jiao Chu to death.'
