History vs. fiction
In official history, Han Sui and Ma Teng were feuding, and Han Sui retreated to the northwest and died of illness; the novel fictionalizes their sworn brotherhood and Han Sui's surrender to Wei after having his hand cut off.
The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Biography of Emperor Wu records that Han Sui and Ma Teng attacked each other and killed each other's wives and children, and after being defeated by Cao Cao, Han Sui retreated to the northwest and died of illness; The Romance of the Three Kingdoms fictionalizes the plot of the two becoming sworn brothers and Han Sui being captured and surrendering to Wei after having his hand cut off. The original text in the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wei, Biography of Emperor Wu reads: 「韩遂徙金城，入氐王千万部，率羌、胡万馀骑与夏侯渊战，击，大破之，遂走西平。」
