Where the histories differ
Shiji and Hanshu differ in wording on the memorial to reduce the fiefs that Dou Ying alone opposed
Regarding the conflict between Dou Ying and Chao Cuo, the Records of the Grand Historian, in the biography of Yuan Ang and Chao Cuo, records: "He was promoted to Censor-in-Chief, and requested that the feudal lords' faults be punished, their territories be reduced, and their branch commanderies be taken over. When the memorial was submitted, the emperor ordered the dukes, ministers, marquises, and members of the imperial clan to deliberate together. No one dared to oppose, only Dou Ying argued against it, and from this, he had a falling out with Chao Cuo." However, the History of the Han, in the biography of Yuan Ang and Chao Cuo, records: "He was promoted to Censor-in-Chief, and requested that the feudal lords' faults be punished, and their branch commanderies be reduced. When the memorial was submitted, the emperor consulted the dukes, ministers, marquises, and members of the imperial clan, and no one dared to oppose, only Dou Ying argued against it, and from this, he had a falling out with Chao Cuo." The two books differ in specific wording and details ("reduce their territories, take over their branch commanderies" versus "reduce their branch commanderies").
