History vs. fiction
In the official history, Ling Tong charged into the enemy formation and cut the ropes, but the novel changed it to Gan Ning accompanying him.
In the campaign against Huang Zu, the official history Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wu, Biographies of Cheng, Huang, Han, Jiang, Zhou, Chen, Dong, Gan, Ling, Xu, Pan, Ding records: 'Xi and Ling Tong both served as the vanguard, each leading a hundred daredevils, wearing double armor, riding large boats, and charging into the enemy's Mengchong ships.' The two fought side by side. However, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 38, rewrites it as: 'Gan Ning said to Dong Xi: "Things have come to this, we must advance." Then they selected more than a hundred small boats,' with Gan Ning and Dong Xi charging and cutting the large ropes.
